EMG/NCV
General Details
An EMG/NCS is a diagnostic test which your Doctor may order to evaluate for potential nerve injury, pain syndromes, neurological problems or muscle problems.
- NCV – The first part is the Nerve Conduction Study. This will evaluate & measure how quickly electrical impulses may travel through your nerves. This test helps your doctor determine the site, nature and extent of any nerve damage
- EMG – The second part is the Electromyography, which measures the electrical activity of the muscles. Analyzing the abnormal electrical signals in your muscles will help your doctor locate the specific site, nature and extent of nerve damage, if any.
Procedure
What can I expect during this test?
The NCS will feel like an electrical impulse.
The EMG portion uses a small needle to evaluate the muscles.
Do I need to stop my medications?
Please let your doctor know if you are on Coumadin (warfarin) or Plavix (clopidegral) as these should be stopped prior to the EMG if of with the prescribing doctor. Otherwise you can continue on all your medications.
Please let you doctor know if you have a pacemaker.
Please do not were any lotions the day of your procedure.
Minimize the amount of rings and bracelets that are worn, as these will needed to be removed.
How long will the test take to finish?
The test usually will take between 30 and 60 minutes.
Please ensure that you arrive 10 minutes early for you appointment.
